Pragmatic Play is going to wind down its sports betting, virtual sports and bingo operations, as the gaming tech firm opts to focus solely on iGaming and slots.
A spokesperson for the Gibraltar company confirmed to SBC News that it had conducted a strategic review of its business, leading to the decision to call it quits on its sports betting activity.
This brings the company’s four year operations in sports betting to an end, and returns it to its traditional focus on online casino technology and products.
This vertical has been the company’s main area of interest since it was founded in 2015 by Julian Jarvis, who remains Chief Executive Officer of the company.
“Following a strategic review, the decision has been made to focus on our core market-leading verticals – in particular, slots, live casino, crash and RNG,” Pragmatic Play’s spokesperson remarked.
“These areas continue to demonstrate strong performance and represent the company’s primary long-term strategic focus.
“As a result, Pragmatic Play will no longer offer bingo and sportsbook products (including virtual sports). We are working closely with partners to support their smooth transition to alternative platforms.”
End of Pragmatic’s sports betting journey
Pragmatic made the leap to sports betting in 2022 with the launch of its sportsbook platform, as the firm set itself the goal of becoming a “one stop shop for all iGaming operations”.
Sports betting was the fifth product vertical for Pragmatic, which had already built up a profile in slots, live casino, bingo and virtual sports – the latter two are also being shut down this year.
The company has undertaken various efforts to enhance its sportsbook proportion over the past few years. This included the addition of esports via a 2025 deal with DATA.BET and the integration of Sporting Solutions’ pre-game and in-play odds in 2024.
A notable Pragmatic Play sportsbook partner has been DAZN Bet. Leading OTT sports streaming platform DAZN struck a deal with Pragmatic Play when it decided to enter the sports betting space back in 2022.
Since then, the company has supported DAZN Bet’s launches in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Spain.
It is uncertain how the rollback of Pragmatic Play’s sportsbook activity will impact DAZN Bet’s operations. The duo may also continue working together on casino operations, however, having signed a deal covering this vertical in March 2023.
Pragmatic Play’s website details partnerships with notable international betting and gaming operators including bet365, William Hill, Entain, Flutter Entertainment, Betsson and 1xbet.
As many of these deals encompass iGaming content like slots though, it is unlikely that the sportsbook window will impact them.
The company has also demonstrated a clear commitment to enhancing its casino solutions recently, having launched a new live casino product, Money Time, in September last year.
