888 will pay a £9.4 million [$US12.5 million] punishment, the third biggest in British gambling regulation history, for several breaches that resulted in consumers suffering massive losses during the Covid epidemic.
The Gambling Commission cited a number of infractions that it said could lead it to reconsider 888’s fitness to operate in the United Kingdom.
The fine comes only weeks before the government is set to release recommendations to alter gambling legislation, which might include affordability checks to ensure that people can afford the stakes they are wagering.
888 was not adequately identifying consumers who were at risk of damage, according to the regulator, because it did not conduct financial checks until they had deposited £40,000.
