Betfair wins Italian ruling to abolish ADM temporary tax charge

Betfair

Betfair has won its Italian ‘tax reform’ appeal made against Italy’s ADM customs and monopolies agency. It was with regards to how a temporary 0.5% wagering tax should apply to its Exchange platform.

This week, Rome’s TAR commercial disputes court ruled in favor of Betfair’s appeal. It stated that a 0.5% tax charge should not be imposed on Betfair’s Exchange activities. It said so as it was a licensed market incumbent.

The ADM applied a temporary 18-month 0.5 tax charge across all sports wagering verticals after Parliament approved Italy’s COVID Revival Decree. It also included retail, digital, and virtual sports wagering units.

After that, Betfair immediately filed an appeal against the ADM’s decision. It claimed that its Exchange would face total tax charges of 111 percent (corporate and wagering). Hence, making Italy a non-viable market for the company.
