In an effort to boost tourism, a business empire associated with Laos’ Kings Romans Casino has restarted construction on an airport in Bokeo province. The move is controversial due to the gaming property owner’s alleged involvement in human trafficking, illegal trade, and money laundering.
The airport’s construction stopped in 2017 due to local residents’ concerns, according to a US government-funded news service. However, the construction resumed last week.
The airport’s land is still under preparation. It will open in 2022.
According to Radio Free Asia, the airport’s developers allegedly made compensatory payments to property owners in the airport’s vicinity.
This airport is unnecessary because Bokeo province already has an airport in the town of Houayxay, according to a resident. “The Dok Ngiew Kham Group intends to construct this airport solely to serve wealthy visitors who wish to gamble.”
According to one worker in the Golden Triangle, the area is “a very free and open zone with all kinds of entertainment for tourists, including prostitutes, drugs, and wildlife.”
“These are available at all entertainment venues,” the unidentified man told Radio Free Asia.
