Illinois: State may remove ban on in-state university sports wagers

illinois

Illinois lawmakers are debating a number of changes to the state’s gambling laws. It also includes lifting the ban on gambling on in-state colleges and universities.

Other bills discussed by the House Executive Committee on Wednesday would legalize and regulate certain internet gambling programs. It may also prohibit “sweepstakes” machines, which are similar to slot machines but are illegal.

Moreover, the prohibition on betting on Illinois collegiate sports teams came into law “at the behest of the universities,” according to Rep. Mike Zalewski, a Riverside Democrat. He was one of the lead architects of the gambling expansion bill that legalized sports betting in 2019.
