The 16th Circuit Court of Macomb County convicted three individuals of Macomb County and one of Wayne County for their participation in the operation of an unlawful gambling enterprise at Jackpott’s of Sterling Heights, 13923 Lakeside Circle, Sterling Heights. The Attorney General filed charges on July 15, 2021, following a collaborative investigation by the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board works closely with police agencies and the Attorney General’s office to find and eliminate illegal gambling operations and the unwanted crime they bring,” said Henry Williams, Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director. “We encourage citizens to report any suspicious activity or illegal gambling by calling the MGCB’s 24-hour anonymous tip line, 888-314-2682, and help us stop illegal gambling in Michigan.”
52-year-old Sam Daoud of Sterling Heights pleaded guilty to one felony count of operating a gambling operation. He was told to pay $300 in legal fees, $130 in compensation for crime victims, and $68 in state fees. Daoud was also given an 18-month probationary period.
The 50-year-old Nadia Daoud from Sterling Heights entered a plea of guilty to one count of gambling operations. She was told to pay $600 in court expenses, $130 in costs for crime victims, and $68 in state costs. She was also sentenced to 11 months of probation with a $30 monthly supervision fee.
Kim Green, 44, of Roseville, entered a guilty plea to maintaining a gambling establishment for profit, a high court misdemeanor. She paid a $978 fine, spent two days in jail, and was given a six-month probationary period.
In Taylor, Brian Shufeldt, 42, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of Operating a Gambling Operation. He was mandated to pay $600 in legal fees, $130 in compensation for crime victims, and $68 in state fees.
A forfeiture order was issued to the State of Michigan for all gambling-related funds and other evidence. This included 35 gaming laptops with slot machines and $14,212 in cash and gift cards that had been seized. The sentencing was presided upon by Judge Michael Servitto.
In addition, Sam Daoud, Brian Shufeldt, and three other people entered guilty pleas to gambling-related offenses in Genesee County relating to running a different establishment, Motorcity Jackpott’s, 2167 W. Vienna Rd., Clio.
On July 18, 2022, Clio residents Christina Reip, 56, and Andrew Reip, 54, entered guilty pleas to one count of maintaining a gambling establishment for profit, a two-year misdemeanor.
On August 18, 2022, Judge F. Kay Behm convicted the Reips and ordered them to pay $550 in fines, $130 in fees for crime victim rights, and $68 in state costs. This occurred in Flint, Genesee County. They each received one day in jail as compensation.
Peter Yerian, 36, of Owosso, entered a plea of guilty on August 18, 2022, to one count of maintaining a gambling house for hire. Brian Shufeldt and Sam Daoud both admitted guilt regarding gambling operations. On October 4, 2022, Yerian, Daoud, and Shufeldt are due to be sentenced in Genesee County.
