A federal grand jury indicted an Indiana casino executive on Tuesday for his alleged role in a scheme to funnel casino funds into the failed congressional campaign of an ex-state senator.
When the new charges were announced this week, John Keeler was already facing four federal charges for allegedly working with out-of-state political consultants to recruit straw donors. Former state Republican Sen. Brent Waltz’s congressional campaign in 2015 was funded by these straw donors. According to federal prosecutors, they were reimbursed with funds from Keeler’s casino company, New Centaur LLC.
According to the Justice Department, Keeler attempted to reduce his company’s taxable income by making those contributions.
