The New South Wales government is considering granting Star Sydney permission to operate an additional 1,000 poker machines. It is as part of a proposal to transfer licenses from underperforming machines in other parts of the state.
In NSW, there are currently 96,000 poker machines spread across 4,000 venues, with The Star accounting for 1,500 of those. The NSW government is expected to support the transfer of slot licenses to the Star. That’s because it believes the casino’s gaming floor can be more strictly regulated than that of some smaller venues.
In the first four months of this year, more than $2.2 billion was spent on pokies in NSW pubs and clubs, with nearly $600 million spent in April alone, a 12.58 percent increase over April 2019.
