Canada – The Senate approves single-event sports betting

Canada

The Senate passed Bill C-218, without amendment, on Third Reading, bringing single-event sports betting to Canada. The bill is now eligible for Royal Assent and to take effect into law. Hence, allowing the Canadian gaming industry to start collaborating with provincial partners to offer single-event wagering to sports betting fans.

Senator David Wells, the bill’s sponsor, stated, “We needed this change for years and we will respond quickly. We also cannot dictate the regulatory practices of Canada’s provincial governments. But we can make this change to one line of the Criminal Code. This allows them to bring single-event sports betting to Canada in a safe manner.”

“Senators and Members of Parliament’s serious and thoughtful consideration of Bill C-218 will dramatically improve Canada’s ability to offer sports betting and provide an important competitive tool for an industry that has been severely impacted by COVID-19 shutdowns,” said Carrie Kormos, Chair of the CGA.
