A proposal to legalize online sports betting, sponsored by three of the country’s top online gambling corporations, has qualified for the November ballot in California, setting up a potentially costly battle with the state’s tribes for control of a market worth billions, according to market analysts.
A consortium led by FanDuel Group, DraftKings Inc., and BetMGM announced Tuesday that it had collected more than 1.6 million signatures in support of an online gambling initiative, well beyond the one million needed to put it before voters this autumn.
If state officials confirm the item, it will appear on the ballot alongside an already qualified ballot measure that would limit sports betting to Native American-owned casinos and horse-racing grounds.
