Mohegan Gaming has pushed back the opening of InspireAthens by two years, putting the project’s completion date to 2026. InspireAthens was a casino and two hotels planned for the landmark plot of Athens’ former international airport on the southern coast at Elliniko.
The most recent update on the casino’s progress came from Greek Investment Minister Adonis Georgiadis. He stated that the casino would open by 2024.
Ray Pineault, Mohegan’s interim CEO, told the Delphi Economic Forum in Athens that the next steps in the process would be to sign the contract and have it cleared by Greek auditors and parliament, with an opening date of 2025 or 2026.
“We estimate that permitting and design will take 12 to 18 months after the contractual negotiation completes,” he said. The IRC (resort) is likely to increase international tourism in the Attica region by at least 10%. It will be a facility that has never been seen before in Europe.”
InspireAthens will comprise a luxury hotel, entertainment venues, shopping, dining, casino, and a mix of premium amenities. The project will help Greece and the other region success in the current era of tourism growth and economic prosperity.
The Inspire Athens development will create more than 7,000 jobs in the region during and after construction. Moreover, the Resort and Casino will hopefully contribute millions of euros in taxes, infrastructure improvements, and public services to both the government and the people of Greece each year.
