Japan’s public gambling on the rise with boat racing sales up 36% in 2020

Japan

The Japan Motor Boat Racing Association reported increased revenue and users in 2020. Its annual report reveals that sales for the year surpassed JPY2.09 trillion (US$19 billion), a 35.7 percent rise from 2019.

The JPY500 billion (US$4.5 billion) year-on-year rise means that 2020 was the first time annual revenue for boat races crossed the JPY2 trillion mark in 28 years.

Moreover, the total number of user purchases in 2020 was 378.2 million, an 8.2 percent increase.

The all-time high was US$19.9 billion, set in 1991. But 2020 revenue estimates surpass that amount for the first time in years.

Officials pointed the good results to the “expansion of internet betting in the COVID-19 pandemic” and “inflow from the pachinko/pachislot industry,”

Besides, the Japan Racing Association recently reported a 3.5 percent rise in revenue to JPY2.9 trillion (US$26.3 billion) in 2020.
