For the first time this month, the Deaf Poker Tour brings its distinctive brand of poker action to the Poker Room at Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. The competition will take place from Thursday, May 12 to Saturday, May 14.
The Deaf Poker Tour was founded in 2006 by six friends who wanted to bring together the top hearing-impaired poker players from across the world. Since then, deaf players from all across the country have gathered at each tournament to sharpen their abilities and share their love of poker. This annual event has previously taken place in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Maryland, and now Philadelphia.
To aid conversations between players and dealers, the tournament supplies sign language interpreters and writing materials at each table. The tournaments are particularly unique in that in order to administer the game, dealers must be taught in sign language. Many of the Live! Poker Room’s dealers and pit managers are relishing the opportunity to acquire a new skill, meet new people, and take part in an event that continues to develop due to the lack of communication hurdles.
“We’re thrilled to host The Deaf Poker Tour for their first tournament in Philadelphia,” said Anne Tran, Director of Poker at Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. “It is truly inspiring to see so many people with an affinity for the game communicate in a different way than we’re used to in the Poker Room. The tournament provides us with the opportunity to bridge the gap between the hearing world and the deaf community and we’re very proud of it.”
More than 100 players are expected to participate in seven events over three days.
