Broadcasters urged to discontinue all betting advertisements during the European Championship. The request was aimed at protecting those who are vulnerable to gambling-related harm.
A group of 60 gamblers, as well as MPs and clinicians, have written an open letter to broadcasters such as ITV, Sky Sports, BT Sport, and Talksport.
According to them, there is “overwhelming evidence” that advertising influences people’s likelihood of betting.
During the 2018 World Cup, ITV aired 172 gambling advertisements.
This amounted to 17% of total advertisements or more than 90 minutes of advertising. Many people criticized it following the tournament.
According to ITV, gambling advertisements during the Euros will be significantly lower than during the 2018 World Cup.
